Huawei In Early Talks With US Firms To License 5G Platform

Vincent Pang, the company's senior vice president and board director, said some firms expressed interest in either a long-term deal or a one-off move, refusing to name or quantify the firms.

"Many businesses are speaking to us, but it would take a long journey to finalize it all," Pang explained this week on a trip to Washington. "They've been showing interest," he said, saying discussions are just a few weeks old and not yet at a detailed level.

Fearing that Huawei hardware might be used to spy on consumers, the US government has led a campaign to convince partners to ban it from their 5 G networks. Huawei has denied the claim on several occasions.
There are currently no US 5 G providers and typically more expensive are European competitors Ericsson and Nokia.

In May, Huawei, the world's largest supplier of telecommunications equipment, was put over national security concerns on a US blacklist, preventing it from buying American-made parts without a special license.

Washington has also brought criminal charges against the firm, alleging bank fraud, violations of U.S. sanctions against Iran, and theft of commercial secrets denied by Huawei.

Regulations due earlier this month from the Department of Commerce are set to effectively ban the company from the U.S. supply chain of telecoms.
In interviews with the New York Times and the Economist last month, CEO and founder Ren Zhengfei first floated the idea of a one-off fee in exchange for access to Huawei's 5 G patents, licenses, code and know-how. Yet previously it wasn't clear if US corporations had any interest.
